Mr. Pottinger’s practice focuses on the litigation of complex or technical matters for clients facing significant financial and reputational risks. Aviation, engineering, commercial disputes, professional liability defense, construction and products cases are typical of the matters Mr. Pottinger handles. His clients have included airlines, a railway, aircraft manufacturers, a private air traffic control provider, pilots, auto dealers, engineers, architects, insurance carriers (first party), businesses, and licensed professionals in a variety of disciplines. Mr. Pottinger has a particular interest in the innovative use of experts and demonstrative exhibits to help fact finders understand complicated, complex or voluminous material. Many of Mr. Pottinger’s clients are businesses. As a former business owner and consultant, Mr. Pottinger is sensitive to the issues facing a business that finds itself involved in a significant legal dispute.
Mr. Pottinger has tried cases to verdict in both state and federal court in a number of jurisdictions around the country. Mr. Pottinger has also tried to verdict cases before administrative law judges and in bankruptcy court. He has also represented clients in both binding and non-binding alternative dispute resolution forums.
Mr. Pottinger is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Law, where he was a staff member of the law review, and the University of Kansas School of Business, from which he graduated with distinction. Before attending law school Mr. Pottinger was part of a business consulting team that assisted in turning around distressed companies. After law school Mr. Pottinger clerked for the Hon. Clarence Brimmer, Chief Judge for United States District Court, District of Wyoming.
Mr. Pottinger is a private pilot with an instrument rating. He is active in the Irish arts community, volunteering in a variety of ways to support the involvement of youth in learning about and participating in the Irish arts. His volunteer activities include the Foundation for Celtic Arts and Studies, which he assisted in founding. Professional groups and associations: Lawyer-Pilot’s Bar Association; Aviation Crime Prevention Institute; Defense Research Institute; and, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Mr. Pottinger is listed in The Legal 500, is AV rated by Martindale-Hubble, and has been listed as a Super Lawyer since 2009.
